Before discussing the usage of User ID in Orion, there are several types of IDs that need to be defined.
NETWORK ID – Environment variable retrieved from the operating system. This is the ID the User enters to login to your network. The Orion User record must reflect the correct Network Login ID in the User record or the User will not be able to enter Orion.
TIMEKEEPER ID – Orion ID contained in the Orion User file if the User is set up as a Timekeeper. Used for individuals within the firm for whom time is tracked.
ENTRY ID – Orion ID entered in the Orion User file if the User is NOT set up as a Timekeeper. Used for individuals who enter time for Timekeepers, but do not record their own time for billing purposes. Normally secretaries and billing facilitators.
DEFAULT ID – As you move through the program, Orion makes the assumption that you want to continue to work with the same ID. To do this, the program establishes a DEFAULT ID.
When you first open Orion, the Network ID is retrieved from the workstation environment. Once Orion has determined the Network Login ID, it uses that to determine the Orion ID for the User. If the Orion User ID it locates is a non-Timekeeper, the program will operate in the Proxy Mode. If the Orion User ID it locates is flagged as a Timekeeper, the program will operate in the Timekeeper Mode. If the Network ID is not found in a User record, the User will not be allowed to enter Orion.
Unless an User is set up as an unrestricted User, the program always begins operation in either the Timekeeper Mode or the Proxy Mode.
Timekeeper Mode
All fields related to Timekeeper ID will default to the current User’s Orion ID. This includes Fee Entry, Time Calendar, Views and Payment Calendar. Upon selecting the Calendar, the program will assume the Timekeeper ID and display time for that ID.
Proxy Mode
When in the Proxy Mode, the program assumes the operator is not a Timekeeper, but has a Proxy List of at least one Timekeeper for whom entries can be made. When you start the program, all fields related to Timekeeper ID will be blank in all windows until a default Timekeeper ID has been set (see below). Once a Timekeeper ID has been selected, the program will use this as the default Timekeeper ID.
Unrestricted Mode
In the Unrestricted Mode, all Timekeeper/User ID windows will default to blank and all active Users can be accessed by using the F8 Look-Up Function or clicking the LOOK-UP Button. Additionally, all Timekeeper ID filter windows will offer an asterisk (*) option for choosing all active Timekeepers.
