Overview
Pervasive PSQL™ is one of the most reliable, low-maintenance, high-performance database management systems (DBMSs) in the world. Pervasive PSQL v11 offers important additions — multi-core optimization, enhanced 64-bit support, IPv6
support and updated developer tools.
New Features
Optimized for Multi-core – Pervasive PSQL v11 is a parallel implementation of Pervasive PSQL that includes several enhancements for multi-core:
- Improvements to the low-level synchronization mechanisms in the transactional interface
- Multiple users can read the same cached file pages simultaneously and their operations can proceed on multiple cores
- Multiple users accessing independent files can proceed on different cores
- Non-user activity such as checkpoint and log management can also use additional cores
64-bit ODBC – Pervasive PSQL v11 supports the ODBC interface on native 64-bit Windows operating systems with 64-bit architecture. The transactional and relational interfaces for 64-bit Pervasive PSQL Server are now in the same common address space.
IPv6 Support – IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the Internet protocol that will follow the current version – IPv4. IPv6 support is important because IPv4 is running out of addresses. Pervasive PSQL v11 supports IPv6 for Btrieve and DTI access methods on Windows and Linux operating systems. Both access methods function correctly in an IPv4 environment, an IPv6 environment or an environment that combines the two. No special configurations of Pervasive PSQL are required.
ADO.NET Provider 3.5 – Pervasive PSQL ADO.NET Data Provider 3.5 supports the new features in .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. Provider 3.5 will run under the .NET Framework 4.0 with support for all the Entity Framework 1.0 features. For developers still using the ADO.NET Provider 3.2, both versions 3.2 and 3.5 are installed by default with the Pervasive PSQL v11 database engine.
PDAC for RAD Studio 2010 and 2009 – PDAC for Pervasive PSQL v11 includes support for Embarcadero’s RAD Studio 2010 and 2009 development environments.
What You Should Know About Multi-Core
The Problem: New server hardware purchased today will have a minimum of dual core and most are being sold with quad and eight-way cores. Users may notice performance problems with applications that have not been redesigned to take advantage of the new processors. This is because managing multiple cores consumes considerable operating system resources. The problem becomes especially noticeable in applications that have multiple users accessing shared data. Unless the software has been written to run processes in parallel, the overhead of managing multiple cores may slow down your application.
The Solution: Pervasive PSQL v11 has been optimized for multi-core so existing Pervasive PSQL applications can easily take advantage of the newest hardware. Upgrading is simple because Pervasive PSQL v11 is backward compatible with previous versions of Pervasive PSQL.
Pervasive PSQL Competitive Advantages
Lowest Total Cost of Ownership – An independent study conducted by Aberdeen Group concluded that no major database product can match Pervasive PSQL’s low total cost of ownership. A primary reason why is Pervasive PSQL’s Zero Database Administrator, or Z-DBA™ architecture. Easy-to-use tools, bulletproof installation, and set-it-and-forget-it simplicity make Pervasive PSQL the perfect workhorse for applications.
Large Database Features at an Affordable Price – Cost-effective Pervasive PSQL offers full security, encryption, management and monitoring tools, plus a host of other features you would expect to see in more expensive DBMS products.
Legendary Stability and Reliability – There’s no doubt why the Windows desktop accounting market uses Pervasive PSQL as the underlying database of choice. Pervasive PSQL’s solid reputation is based on product longevity – as one customer puts it, “Pervasive PSQL just runs and runs and runs.”
Backward Compatibility – Pervasive has over a 25-year history of delivering reliable database upgrades. Pervasive PSQL v11 delivers years of backward compatibility.
